Learning Support & Learning Support Plus Classes
The Learning Support and Learning Support Plus Classes are a supplement to our main Program. It is offered for selected subjects in Grades 7-12. The purposes of these classes is to provide our students with the opportunity to learn with other students in a class setting. Students who sign up for Learning Support classes participate in weekly (or in a few cases bi-weekly) classes conducted by one of our teachers via phone using the discussion method. Students particiate in a class with a teacher who will:
- Teach new concepts and review previous concepts
- Lead discussions among the students
- Challenge the students with pop quizzes or role playing assignments
- Provide structure and accountability
- Review and grade quizzes or papers (in Learning Support Plus classes) and provide feedback on the quality of work
We offer two levels of classes: Learning Support and Learning Support Plus. Students are welcome to take classes at either level or may take a mix of classes as each level. The content of the classes determines whether it is Learning Support or Learning Support Plus. For more information on the differences between Learning Support and Learning Support Plus, please see the chart below.
In late July our office contacts the student to confirm acceptance in the class(es) of their choice and to confirm the day and time of the class. Class times are pre-set. In late August our office contacts the student to provide the conference number to call and the teacher’s name, personal phone number, and e-mail. The students in Learning Support Plus will also receive a list of which assignments to send in.
During the school year, the student calls into his weekly class and, along with other students, works on new concepts with the teacher and reviews previous concepts. Students receive approximately one hour per week of class teaching. Students do not have personal one-on-one calls with their teacher as a general rule (though teachers are available for questions outside of class). In the Learning Support Classes a semester sample of work is submitted to the teacher for grading. Additionally grades for the class discussion can be given by the teacher at the request of the parents. In the Learning Support Plus Classes weekly work is submitted to the teacher for grading as it is in the Teacher Assisted/Directed Program. The teacher will notify the parent of student grade status 2-4 times per year. (Parents are always free to ask more often for updates.)
Parents play a key role in the education of their children in the Learning Support and Learning Support Plus classes. While the teacher takes an active role in teaching concepts, leading discussions, and reviewing/grading work, the teacher does not replace the parent as the primary educator of their child. The parent continues to hold a vital role in the student's education, primarily with regard to the daily discussions/work. The parent also remains involved by overseeing the student's schedule, making sure the student is submitting work on time and making his scheduled phone calls. Parents are welcome to sit in on the classes that their students are doing.
Students in the Learning Support and Learning Support Plus classes are required to use Mother of Divine Grace School's recommended syllabi and books for the classes they are taking. There may be some slight modifications to the courses made by the teacher at the start of the year, but beyond this parents and students are not allowed to make modifications to the course work.
