Bible Study
Open To: Students in Grades 10-12
Materials Used: MODG's Bible Study Syllabus, The Bible, Introduction to the Bible by Fr. Laux
Description: This course uses Father Laux's text Introduction to the Bible as a framework. Students will also read the Bible. Class discussion will center around key passages from the week's readings. Important topics, such as the necessity of works for salvation, will be discussed. Paper grading is available through the TA program if desired, or through class.
Catholic Doctrine
Open To: Students in Grades 11-12
Materials Used: MODG's Catholic Doctrine Syllabus, Following Christ in the World by Anne Carroll, various encyclicals– see book list
Description: This course covers basic philosophy, Catholic social and moral teachings, and advanced theological topics. The main text, Following Christ in the World, is a springboard facilitating the consideration of fundamental concepts. The Catechism of the Catholic Church and The Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma (by Ludwig Ott) are both very helpful resources. Paper grading is available. (See options on enrollment form.) Paper grading is available through the TA program if desired, or through class.
Faith & Morality
Open To: Students in Grades 8-12
Materials Used: MODG's Faith & Morality Syllabus, Chief Truths of the Faith by Fr. Laux, Catholic Morality by Fr. Laux
Description: This course will cover topics relating to the chief truths of the faith and Catholic morals. It presents for the student’s consideration principles by which to live one's life. Application of those principles in discussed in class as well. Paper grading is available through the TA program if desired, or through class.
Religion 7
Open To: Students in Grades 6-9
Materials Used: The Bronze Bow, Acts of the Apostles, Story of the Church. MODG 7th Grade Religion syllabus.
Description: This course is a Bible History. All work is done orally and graded by the teacher, except 4 assignments, which are turned into the teacher who will grade them. If the parents desires the student to do more work in writing (short answers to questions), the parent may add TA to the course.
Religion 8
Open To: Students in Grades 7-10
Materials Used: MODG's 8th Grade Religion Syllabus, Our Life in the Church (Faith & Life 8), The Faith Explained, Baltimore Catechism, No. 2
Description: This course covers topics that are central to living our faith. The main text is supplemented in class with selections from The Faith Explained. References will be made to the Baltimore Catechism as well. Paper grading is available through the TA program if desired, or through class.
Sacraments & Apologetics
Open To: Students in Grades 9-12
Materials Used: MODG's Sacraments & Apologetics Syllabus, Mass and the Sacraments by Fr. Laux, Catholic Apologetics by Fr. Laux, Beginning Biblical Apologetics by Chacon and Burnham
Description: This course focuses on apologetics, and also delves into Church teaching on the sacraments, showing the reasonableness of the Catholic position, the ordering of the virtues to society, and theology's compatibility with reason. Paper grading is available through the TA program if desired, or through class.
