First Grade Syllabus (© 2019) $30.00

The First Grade Syllabus contains detailed daily lesson plans for Religion, Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Poetry, Science, Geography, Art and Music. It also contains a variety of teaching resources including First Grade Subject Rubrics and Learning Objectives, suggested daily schedules, teaching tips and several lists of grade level appropriate literature. We have provided below a sample of the first week from the syllabus along with a list of the books used in the syllabus.

In Religion we use the St. Joseph’s First Communion Catechism to begin the study of Catholic doctrine which helps to provide a life long Catholic formation. The student will also develop the habit of retention by memorizing the questions and answers about his faith. In Mathematics we use Arithmetic 1 (A Beka) which has a spiral approach to learning concepts. Once learned, a mathematical concept is practiced on a daily basis, so that the student never has a chance to forget how to do it. In Reading we continue Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (Engelman, Haddox, and Bruner). In Writing we use Writing Our Catholic Faith Grade 1 (Wasylyk) to introduce the student to and continue the practice of the formation of words. In Poetry we continue to use The Harp and Laurel Wreath for selections of poetry to memorize. In Science we encourage a love of the natural world through a variety of science projects in First Grade Science (MODG). And in Geography we use First Grade Map Skills (MODG) to begin the study of geography. In Art we use First Grade Art (MODG) to continue the student’s art appreciation along with a variety of kits from Illuminated Ink to provide the student with hands on craftwork. In Music we use Our Catholic Hymns to continue the student’s familiarity with the great hymns of the Church; the student also begins more formal music appreciation of beautiful music selections. In addition the syllabus has several lists of good literature for the student broken down by the liturgical year, a calendar of saints and a general list of literature.

Online versions of the MODG syllabi are provided to enrolled families free of charge. Paper copies of the syllabi are also available for purchase from the MODG office, with a 30% discount for enrolled families.
